Lung Cancer Screening Now Available at Interconnect Imaging
From July 2025, Australians at increased risk of lung cancer can access free low-dose CT scans through the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP). This new national initiative aims to detect lung cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages.

Interconnect Imaging is proud to participate in this important public health program, offering fully Medicare-funded screening at both our Heidelberg and Frankston clinics.
The Importance of Early Detection
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Australia, claiming more lives each year than breast and prostate cancers combined. Tragically, many cases are only diagnosed when the disease has reached an advanced stage, limiting treatment options and reducing survival rates.

However, studies show that screening with low-dose CT scans can detect lung cancer much earlier—often before symptoms develop. This gives patients and doctors the best possible chance of intervening early and improving outcomes.

Who is Eligible for Free Lung Cancer Screening?
You may qualify for no-cost screening if you:
-
Are between 50 and 70 years old
-
Do not have current symptoms suggestive of lung cancer
-
Are a current smoker or quit within the past 10 years
-
Have a significant smoking history (as measured in pack-years—your GP can help calculate this)
How the Screening Process Works
Step 1: Speak to Your GP
Your doctor will confirm whether you meet the eligibility criteria and provide a referral if you're suitable for the program.
Step 2: Book Your Scan at Interconnect Imaging
With your referral in hand, contact us to arrange your Medicare-funded low-dose CT scan—completely bulk-billed for eligible patients.
Step 3: Receive Expert Review and Follow-Up.
Your scan will be interpreted by our specialist radiologists, and results will be sent to your GP.
You'll also be enrolled in the National Cancer Screening Register, which will manage reminders for future screenings.

-
If your results are normal, you’ll typically be invited to return for another scan in two years.
-
If further investigation is needed, your GP will discuss the next steps with you.
